PRP plasma therapy

As we start to recognise the signs of ageing, it may not be a welcomed sight that looks back at us in the mirror. Fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles, dull, dehydrated skin and unsightly creases and folds can all take their toll.

If you are looking to improve your overall skin quality, tone and texture and to revitalise your complexion, but would like to take a more natural approach to aesthetic treatments for anti-ageing, we offer PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections, here at Signature Clinic London, to restore the youthful glow of your skin and reduce lines, wrinkles and the signs of facial ageing.

What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a substance that is thought to promote healing when injected and has been used on famous athletes like Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal to help heal their injuries. Used in medicine for the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints with great success for many years, research has shown that PRP can also heal and restore the skin. Plasma is a component of your blood that contains special proteins or ‘growth factors’ that support cell growth. PRP is produced by isolating the plasma from your own blood, then concentrating it in a specially designed centrifuge.

For skin restoration, PRP is injected in to areas of the face that are experiencing the effects of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles, skin folds and lack of volume in areas such as the cheeks. When injected in to the skin, PRP stimulates collagen production and cell migration. The effects are natural-looking and subtle and can last for as long as 2 years.

PRP can offer significant improvements to the following skin concerns

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damaged and dehydrated skin
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Acne scarring
  • Dull, dehydrated skin
  • Dark under-eye circles

How does the treatment work?

During your PRP treatment, for skin restoration, a small sample of blood is taken from your arm, exactly as you would give blood at the doctors. The sample of blood is then placed into a special centrifuge which separates the platelet-rich plasma from the blood. The harvested PRP is then injected in to the facial areas requiring treatment.

Over time, the growth factors and regenerative molecules within the PRP released, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin formation as well as cellular growth and remodelling. The result is skin that is more youthful-looking, resilient, toned and hydrated.

An average, you will require around 3 PRP treatments, 3 to 8 weeks apart for optimum results. Maintenance top up treatments are generally recommended every 6 to 12 months.
The results with PRP can last anything up to 2 years. However, within this time a top up treatment may be recommended, at around 12 months. If you keep a healthy lifestyle and take care of your skin using high-grade cosmeceuticals and sun protection, this will help maintain your results from PRP for skin rejuvenation for longer.

Side-effects and recovery time

As with any injectable treatment, you may experience some level of discomfort, swelling or bruising following this procedure, depending on your individual thresholds and this is entirely normal and will subside in a day or so. As PRP comes from your own blood, adverse side-effects and allergic reactions are extremely rare.
